The Call for Candidates to run in our 2022 Board of Directors Election has now closed. Applications must have been received by noon (MST) on November 19, 2021.
connectFirst Credit Union invited qualified members to put their names forward as candidates for our Board of Directors. This member-elected Board was recruiting a diverse group of engaged members who are excited by the opportunity to govern a forward-looking, responsible and successful credit union, driven by what matters most: its members and our communities.
In 2022, there will be five (5) positions available on the connectFirst Credit Union Board. Four (4) positions hold a 3-year term and one (1) position holds a 1-year term.
For 2022, the board is specifically looking for individuals who bring identified core competencies and specialty skills, expertise and background to the governance of the credit union. Recognizing not all board members will have all desired core competencies and specialty skills when appointed, we are seeking candidates who demonstrate a commitment and aptitude to acquire a level of competency necessary to make them effective board members.

Applications officially closed at noon on November 19.
Online Member Voting Opens January 24, 2022.
Election results will be announced at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

As a member for over 20 years, I was proud to be associated with a credit union and the values it demonstrates as a socially responsible organization. I saw joining the connectFirst board as an opportunity build on and grow my experience and network.
I saw joining the connectFirst board as an opportunity to contribute to strategic discussions on how the credit union is growing and continuing to be relevant for members, businesses and communities. It was also a great opportunity to be a role model for my kids, so they too can aspire for leadership roles.
Even though I had been a member of the First Calgary division for such a long time, what struck me was how much I had to learn and how much work it takes to be part of a board.
The connectFirst board is incredibly welcoming and active. They promote a culture of listening to each director and so everyone needs to come prepared to make a meaningful contribution.
To someone considering applying, I would say be ready to step out of your comfort zone as the issues faced by the board are very diverse – regulatory, financial, personnel, strategic risk etc. and the opinions are varied. Consensus isn’t always easy, but that is what makes working together as a board so meaningful.
For me there were a lot of surprises during my first year on the connectFirst Board. What struck me most was the amount of education and time spent learning to get up to speed – greater than I anticipated -that and the number of acronyms used.
It took some time to understand the roles, responsibilities and expectations of the board, and was challenged by how varied and complex the decisions requiring the board’s input were.
That being said, the highlights for me were the pleasure of meeting new people, being part of the exciting new chapter of the connectFirst rebrand and seeing first hand what it means to connectFirst employees, members and the community.

I had been considering making the leap from a volunteer board to a professional board for quite a while but was looking to work with an organization that was equally committed to benefiting its community. connectFirst Credit Union’s dedication to its members and the many communities it works in is so remarkable, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
When the call for applications went out, I felt my skill set was a good match based on the published skills and competencies that connectFirst was looking for at the board table. I also understood that bringing in new voices rejuvenates a board and ensures that they have the tools they need to work on behalf of their members. I felt that I could demonstrate my value in the new voice I would bring.

connectFirst always puts together a very comprehensive Candidate Guide. Read it, study it, and follow it. It will tell you a lot about the board’s role, what the board is looking for and allow you to examine your skills and decide if you would be an asset to the credit union.
Make sure you would have enough time to fulfill your role as a Director if you were elected to the connectFirst board. When you see the board calendar, it might look as though we only meet occasionally. In reality, we have committee meetings throughout the year and ongoing training and educational courses—all of which require considerable preparation time. We also need to be available to discuss issues as they arise and to the management team as they need us. This first year is the most time-intensive for new directors as we get up to speed.
And, lastly, know your strengths and potential weaknesses. As a candidate, I was not expected to have expertise in every area, but to demonstrate how I would intend to add value to board conversations and bring an attitude of continual learning and growth.
These first few months with the connectFirst board have been equally challenging and invigorating. While we have mostly been meeting on Zoom, my fellow directors have given me the support I have needed to settle into my role. Great boards require strong communication and open minds—both of which our board has.
I have been impressed with the CFCU board’s knowledge, expertise, and commitment to continually learn and improve. I see those same values throughout the organization—the connection between the board, the leadership team, management and the employees has been a welcome surprise.
Keeping pace with CFCU’s ever-changing needs has been the biggest challenge. connectFirst is a large organization, with many moving and constantly evolving parts. Learning all facets of our business takes dedication and a commitment to our values. Seeing our operations through the lenses of “Make money make a difference,” “Do what's right for every member,” and “Think big, act local, take charge, and make it easy” focuses our board to be the voice for our membership.
